Oh my y’all, can you believe that it is that time of year again? It is hard to believe that we are already into December and that before you know it Santa will have been here and it will be all over. I am very excited about today’s post because it is a collaboration with my dear friend Diana from Being Mommy With Style. If you haven’t checked out Di’s blog or YouTube channel, you must go and do that. She is going to be sharing her Disney inspired holiday DIY with you over on YouTube, so I hope you will go and support her over on her channel.
Being a member of many Disney Facebook groups I noticed one item that was being talked about a lot was the Lowe’s Gemmy Disney Mickey 36-in LED Artificial Topiary but at a price tag of $169.00 Canadian I just couldn’t bring myself to pay that. I decided that I could create this for a fraction of the cost.
So, I am not going to spend a whole bunch of time chatting, I am going to jump right into the DIY, so let’s go!
Materials:
Terracotta Planter Pot
Red and black Acrylic Paint
Paint brushes
Planter foam
3 topiary balls, 2 sizes
LED battery operated lights, 3 sets
hot glue gun
red bow
wooden pillar (I used a bamboo stick that I had on hand)
This project was actually very simple to put together. I think the most challenging part was finding topiary balls in different sizes that would actually work. Finding one size was easy, but then to find one that was bigger to use for the head of Mickey was definitely more difficult.
So to begin, I painted the first coat of red paint onto the terracotta planter. I also painted the wooden stick (well in my case, bamboo) black and allowed that to dry as well.
The paint I decided to use was just a crafter’s acrylic paint from the dollar store. It was the most accessible to me and the red color was the perfect shade of red. (It was called Christmas red).
While the first coat was drying, I started to string the LED lights through the topiary balls.
Once all the lights are strung through out the balls, I placed them aside and painted the second coat of red onto the planter. After that is dry you will paint on the 2 ovals onto the pot.
Now comes the fun part, assembling it all together. Start by placing the flower foam into the base of the planter and trimming to the proper height. Next you will stick the wooden stick into the largest topiary (the balls I had were hollow). Then you will stick that into the foam. Do the same for the other 2 balls, except those sticks will be smaller (and I learned while doing this to also place hot glue on the stick for extra stability.)
Then place the bow on and you are done.
I painted the foam black but I think I would buy some black felt and glue that on the top for a neater look.
Seriously, this was such an easy project and for a fraction of the cost of the Lowe’s one. Stay tuned for another post on the break down of the price difference of this one versus the Lowe’s one.
So, that is it for today. Go and check out my video that I will have posted over on my YouTube channel and to also remember to go and check out Diana’s over on her channel as well, Being Mommy With Style.
Don’t forget to check out the video below or over on my youtube channel, Happily Organized Chaos (where you will find Disney Vlogs and packing videos as well)
I hope you all have a wonderful day and as always, take care.
What size topiarys did you use?
